The Nest Investigation
The Purple Room’s investigation in 2020-2021 combined two of the interests that popped up in the fall: an interest in building and construction, and in the neighborhood birds they saw everywhere they went. Throughout, the Purple Room’s investigation was built around themes of home and environment, family and safety, and took into account their love of the outdoors and appreciation of the natural world. They learned to identify different types of birds and their calls, played bird school and bird families, and, in the spring, their work culminated in a fully child-led project, the design, planning, and construction of a child-sized nest built out of driftwood in the Urban Meadow community garden.
